Today’s generation almost certainly isn’t aware of it, but for the old-school business owner or maybe even the advertising and marketing representative who has been at it for years, the internet world is a fairly new beast. Gone are the days of just advertising on the radio and in the local papers and magazines, with perhaps a commercial spot on local TV for companies with a few more advertising dollars to spend. Marketing and social media (and search engine marketing, for those of you with some advanced knowledge) can be a fantastic and free way of advertising that can reach more people than those tried and true-but also antique-ways of advertising.

Social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter can be really helpful in reaching a broad audience. Once an account is set up for your business, start updating your status on Facebook and post news, events, and pictures related to your industry on a regular basis. Contests also work well on Facebook; try one that gives a prize for the person who gets your company to a set amount of “likes.” For Twitter, “tweet” out links to articles, company news and updates, and anything that the public may find new or exciting. With both outlets, remember that they should be updated often, but not so much that the information is extraneous and useless to your followers. Try to find the balance between updating too regularly and not enough is key for marketing and social media.

Search engine marketing can be to some extent trickier; with many businesses, a marketing firm may be hired. The basic idea behind search engine marketing is that your company is easily searchable when searched in a search engine site like Google or bing. By using a number of different strategies, your business will pull to the top of a search, which is the ultimate goal. One way you can do this yourself is to write copy on each page of your website, using key terms that people might use in a search to find your company.

Advertising today is very different than it was even ten years ago. With the explosion of marketing and social media, and with search engine marketing becoming a vital component of an overall marketing strategy, basic know-how of these outlets will go a long way in staying current with today’s advertising trends. Use them to your advantage and you’ll be one step ahead of the competition that is too out of date with old advertising methods to try these new and exciting marketing and social media/search engine marketing strategies.
