Not so in the world we live in now; between social media and the large range of sites made by user-generated content-from forums to review sites-there are just too many outlets to keep track of. Not to mention, these outlets aren’t limited by the rules of journalistic integrity; if somebody were to post something malicious on a review site, for example, you have no ability to have it taken down.

Therefore, managing your online reputation can be a huge chore. Since there are literally far too many webpages for you to effectively monitor-and, even if you were somehow blessed with the superhuman ability to do it you wouldn’t be able to change anything anyway-it seems as though there is not that much you can do that will have an effect.

However, while you don’t have the ability to keep people from talking about you, you CAN keep what they’re saying from being seen by too many people. Obviously, the first step is to keep your company from engaging in the kind of behavior that people will write negative things about, but that doesn’t always have an effect; as you are aware, there are people out there who will say malicious lies about you no matter what you do.

Therefore, it’s your mission to manage your online reputation as best as you can. Work to make sure that untruthful posts don’t appear in search engine results for your name. Find the most heavily used websites that talk about your industry and go there as much as you can. Respond to every comment; since these conversations are public, people will be able to see your side of the story as well. Keep in mind that if you don’t engage in online reputation management of your company, somebody else is going to, and you have no say on how they do it.
